Skopelos Town offers an attractive combination of old and new. A bustling waterfront of bars and tavernas, shaded by mulberry trees and colourful awnings, leads up the hillside past tiny shops to a maze of narrow, stepped passage ways overshadowed by old Venetian styled houses with wooden balconies adorned by contrasting colours of red, purple and orange bougainvillaea. The passageways pass ornate courtyards of shrubs and flowering plants and small handsome churches such as the ninth century Agios Athanassios. At the top of the hill are the remains of the thirteenth century Venetian fortress and an intimate ‘ouzeri’ with one of the best views on the island and where local musicians play enchanting Rembetica songs. The town is well preserved and appears to be given a daily sweep and whitewash. The peaceful bay of Agnondas has three waterfront tavernas which specialise in varied fish dishes.
