Crete Villa Holidays

Crete's history, geography, mythology and climate has been shaped by the White Mountains in the west, the Psiloritis massifs in the centre and the Sitia Mountains in the east. The mountains descend to cultivated plains and sleepy villages and then down to a coastline of small fishing villages and sandy beaches. An island rich in contrasts, Crete offers seclusion to the escapist, a sense of discovery to the explorer and varied entertainment for all visitors.

It would be difficult to ignore the opportunities to discover at least some of Crete’s unique treasures and hiring a car is therefore important, whether to visit the Minoan palace at Knossos, the fascinating old towns of Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion, the dramatic Gorge of Samaria, the small villages beneath snow-capped mountains or just to find one’s own little beach.

Chania
Flanked by the dramatic White Mountains and a coastline of sandy beaches, Chania is clearly divided between a modern, bustling centre and an intimate atmosphere contained in the old quarter beside the port. The attractive harbourfront, with its colourful assortment of tavernas and bars, leads back through narrow streets lined with old Venetian houses and archways to the busy commercial centre. The old, walled town invites the visitor to become lost amongst its theatrical bustle of shops, markets, tavernas, bars and village street life. The town is a beautiful puzzle of Minoan, Venetian and Turkish architecture punctuated by hidden squares.

East and West of Chania

Following the coastal roads east of Chania an undulating countryside of forested valleys hides small villages close to attractive sandy beaches, some with watersports facilities – others just sleepy retreats. Our properties are to be found in or close to the villages of Kalives, Kokkino Horio, Vamos, Vrisses and Kambia – all within an hour’s drive of Chania.

This area of Crete offers a slower-paced escape from the built-up resorts and opportunities to discover the island’s history, culture and natural beauty. Lake Kournas is a haven for wildlife; the Samaria and Imbros Gorges will test the more intrepid explorers. Argiroupolis has Roman tombs and mosaics surrounded by small waterfalls; daily expeditions to varied archaeological sites can be made. Many of the villages specialise in individual crafts: traditional furniture makers, bell makers, silk co-operatives, basket makers, glassblowers and lace makers. A good selection of tavernas with tempting and more home-made alternatives to fast food.

Further east, the port of Rethymnon leads to a fortified centre containing well preserved Venetian and Turkish architecture.
To the west and south of Chania we feature a selection of villas set amongst olive groves, vineyards and citrus groves for those looking to escape the smallest of crowds.
