The island’s small ferry takes passengers on a four nautical mile trip from busy Nidri on Lefkas, past Onassis’ island of Skorpios and on to the sheltered port of Vathy, where fishing boats and visiting yachts moor alongside the waterfront houses and tavernas. Just inland lie the two sleepy villages of Katomeri and Spartohori, where narrow streets of cobblestone pass whitewashed houses, a few shops and a selection of tavernas.
Spartohori enjoys dramatic views across the sea to the mountains of the Greek mainland and has two minimarkets. Katomeri, one kilometre from Vathy port, is the peaceful capital of the island and has a bakery.
A coastal road winds through a beautiful landscape of olive groves and pine trees, where the remains of ancient windmills and threshing floors can be found, and leads to secluded bays and beaches.
We offer just a handful of villas on Meganissi. Each villa is set on a hillside of olive groves and pine trees above the sea, providing modern comforts and privacy. There is no need for a hire car (there are very few cars on the island) as each villa is within a ten to fifteen minute walk of a port, tavernas, shops and a selection of beaches. Boat hire can be arranged locally (fibreglass boats with up to 30HP outboard engines) to explore the island’s coastline, discover dramatic sea caves and a beachfront monastery and to enjoy a picnic on a deserted beach. Inland there are many walking trails through olive groves to enjoy the island’s stunning views.
For those who find it difficult to adapt to Meganissi’s slow pace and tranquillity, the daily ferry to Nidri on Lefkas takes just 30 minutes and offers the opportunity of a day trip to include the busier but attractive Lefkas Town.
